OSAKA, April 28 Kyodo - Tatsuhiro Boku (L), who served more than 20 years of a life term over an 11-year-old girl's death in a 1995 house fire, heads to the Osaka District Court with his lawyers on April 28, 2016, for a retrial to exonerate him. Boku later declared his innocence, and the court is expected to pronounce Boku not guilty in early August.

NIIGATA, Japan - Students of the Kashiwazaki Comprehensive High School in Kashiwazaki, Niigata Prefecture use their school gymnasium to sort out eating utensils donated by people around Japan to victims of the July 16 earthquake in Niigata. The donation campaign was launched by a Kobe-based non-profit organization after the city was destroyed by the 1995 Great Hanshin Earthquake. Isao Arai, head of the NPO Himawari-no-Yume Kikaku (Project Sunflower Dream), says the utensils would be distributed to the quake victims from mid-August after they move into temporary housing being built by the government. TOKYO, Japan - Members of a government panel sit at the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry to discuss polyester staple fiber imports from South Korea and Taiwan. The panel urged the government to impose antidumping duties of up to 13.5% on those imports. The antidumping tariffs will be the first imposed by Japan since August 1995 when it imposed similar levies on cotton yarn from Pakistan.

The twin-hull yacht Explorer, skippered by French adventurer Bruno Peyron, set sail from Yokohama port bound for San Francisco on Aug. 2 in a bid to set a world record for the fastest crossing of the Pacific by yacht. Peyron said he hopes to complete the trip in 12-14 days, beating the 16-day record set by U.S. adventurer Steve Fossett in August 1995 with a bigger and speedier boat. The Explorer, 26 meters from bow to stern, is eight meters longer than Fossett's and has a top speed of 37 knots.
